Texans Against Oppression Website

Overview

Texans Against Oppression is a Houston-based activist organization committed to fighting systemic injustice and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. I was brought on to lead the design and development of their digital presence, helping them establish a clear brand identity and creating a website that could effectively communicate their mission, mobilize supporters, and promote events.

Client: Texans Against Oppression
Location: Houston, Texas
Project Type: Website Design, Branding, Print Design
Tools Used: WordPress (Elementor), Adobe Illustrator, Canva

Goals

  • Establish a strong, cohesive brand identity
  • Build a clean, accessible, and responsive website using WordPress and Elementor
  • Create visual assets to support upcoming protest and outreach efforts
  • Provide a platform for news, event updates, and supporter engagement

My Role

As the lead designer and developer, I worked closely with the core members of the activist group to:

  • Facilitate a branding workshop, helping define their core values, tone of voice, and visual identity
  • Design a custom logo representing their values
  • Select a color palette with inspiration drawn from traditional patriotic symbols and the Texas state flower, the bluebonnet
  • Develop a fully responsive website using WordPress and Elementor, focused on clarity, ease of use, and accessibility
  • Design print materials, including flyers for an upcoming protest, to ensure consistency across all outreach channels

Design Approach

Branding & Identity

The visual identity reflects a fusion of grassroots activism and local pride. We chose a color scheme inspired by patriotic reds and blues, with a unique twist: a deep blue drawn from the Texas bluebonnet, symbolizing regional identity and resilience. Typography was selected for readability and strength, pairing clean sans-serif headers with approachable body text.

The logo integrates symbolic elements such as a raised fist and the state of Texas, rooted in themes of solidarity, empowerment, and local identity. The design is simple enough to scale across both digital and print formats, while remaining bold and instantly recognizable.

Website Development

Built entirely within Elementor for WordPress, the site was designed to be modular and easy to manage for non-technical users. Key features include:

  • Homepage with mission statement and recent updates
  • Events page to promote actions and rallies
  • Contact form
  • Mobile-first responsive design for accessibility across all devices

Print & Promotional Materials

In preparation for an upcoming protest, I also designed a set of flyers and posters that aligned with the website’s visual language. These materials featured bold calls to action, the group’s newly developed brand elements, and clear event details.

Impact

The new branding and website provided the group with a professional, unified platform to engage supporters and grow their presence in both digital and real-world spaces. The design helped them make a strong first impression with new allies and gave them the tools to organize more effectively.

Takeaways

This project was a powerful reminder of how intentional design can amplify a movement’s message. Collaborating closely with a passionate group like Texans Against Oppression made it all the more rewarding to create a digital space that truly reflects their values and mission.
